Strings and Gravity

A top down understanding of the fundamental laws of physics may come from String Theory or other models with more than the usual four space-time dimensions. Supergravity theorists Chris Pope and Ergin Sezgin focus on Braneworld models within string theory, localised gravity with non-compact extra dimension, and black holes. On the more formal side string theorist Kathrin Becker works on torsional geometries and flux compactifications which play a vital role in constructing Standard Model-like theories using String Theory. They are also interested in string cosmology, in particular in models of inflation using extended branes, as well as in three-dimensional gravity, Kerr/CFT correspondence and in holography and its application to condensed matter systems.
