Scully Awarded For Laser Research
COLLEGE STATION —
The Optical Society of America has presented Marlan O. Scully of Texas A&M University the 1998 Charles Hard Townes Award for his role in laying the theoretical foundation for laser science, free electron lasers and lasers without inversion.
Scully is the Burgess Distinguished Professor of Physics and director of both the Center for Theoretical Physics and the Institute of Quantum Studies at Texas A&M.
The Charles Hard Townes Award, established in 1981, is presented annually for major contributions to the field of quantum electronics.
Scully’s award is based on work expanding on his previously formed theory on the laser. He studied methods of using lasers to suppress emission noise and also demonstrated the possibilities for new resolution microscopes.
