Introduction to Quantum Field Theory and Curved Space-Time

Speaker:

William Unruh (U. of British Columbia, Hagler Institute, Texas A&M)

Location:

Address:

Mitchell Physics Building

College Station, Texas 77843-4242

About The Speaker

William George "Bill" Unruh is a world-renowned physicist, working at the University of British Columbia, who, among his other important discoveries, predicted that an accelerating observer will observe black-body radiation where an inertial observer would observe none. This effect is now broadly referred to as Unruh radiation.

Event Details

As a special event, Professor Unruh, a Faculty Fellow of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University, will deliver two lectures, as a part of the IQSE/AMO quantum optics seminar series, held jointly with the OSA student chapter meeting, introducing the fundamentals of quantum field theory and curved space-time. These lectures will take place on October 4 and 5 and will cover the following topics:

  • Mode norms
  • Annihilation and creation operators as you probably don't know them
  • Acceleration radiation
  • Black hole evaporation
  • Vacuums
