William George "Bill" Unruh is a world-renowned physicist, working at the University of British Columbia, who, among his other important discoveries, predicted that an accelerating observer will observe black-body radiation where an inertial observer would observe none. This effect is now broadly referred to as Unruh radiation.
As a special event, Professor Unruh, a Faculty Fellow of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University, will deliver two lectures, as a part of the IQSE/AMO quantum optics seminar series, held jointly with the OSA student chapter meeting, introducing the fundamentals of quantum field theory and curved space-time. These lectures will take place on October 4 and 5 and will cover the following topics:
