Biomechanical Assessment of Myocardial Infarction Using Optical Coherence Elastography

Myocardial infarctions (MI), also known as heart attacks, are caused due to a reduced blood flow (reduced oxygen) to the heart. This can cause overall impaired heart function as well as damage to the heart's muscle cells, known as cardiomyocytes. A research team from the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine has employed the use of their Optical Coherence Elastography (OCE) setup to better understand the changes in the heart's elastic properties following an MI in mice hearts. I will present their method of OCE and their results they found in their study.
