Supernova Interactions with the Interstellar Medium

Speaker:

Peter Shull (Oklahoma State University)

Location:

Address:

Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics & Astronomy

College Station, Texas 77843

Event Details

I will present an overview of the various interactions of supernova progenitors and supernovae with their surroundings. Important factors include the winds and radiation fields of the progenitors, and the structure of the original, ambient interstellar medium. The Cygnus Loop in our Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud’s N49 and N63A exemplify possible outcomes. I will conclude with a description of Oklahoma State University’s Mendenhall Observatory and its 0.6 m robotic telescope.
