The construction of non-Abelian gauge symmetries in F-theory has been known since the discovery of the theory itself. However, the realization of Abelian gauge symmetries has been much more elusive, with only a few known explicit, but rather sporadic examples. In his talk, Dr. Klevers will present a systematic approach to engineer Abelian gauge factors in F-theory. Abelian gauge symmetries are related to the Mordell-Weil group of rational points on an elliptic curve. He will construct explicitly the elliptic curves with rank two and three Mordell-Weil groups, leading to a **U(1)xU(1)** and **U(1)xU(1)xU(1)** Abelian sector, and their Calabi-Yau elliptic fibrations. The matter spectrum of F-theory on these Calabi-Yau manifolds is worked out, both in six and four dimensions and also in the presence of an additional **SU(5)** GUT, by a study of singularities of their elliptic fibrations. Closed expressions for the four-dimensional chiral indices of matter for entire classes of F-theory compactifications are presented. Since 4D chirality is induced by G4-flux in F-theory, conditions on G4-flux in the dual M-theory are formulated, which guarantee a consistent lift to F-theory. These G4-flux conditions replace earlier constraints derived from arguments based on 4D Lorentz symmetry.
