Characterization of a SEBAT Constructed With Off-the-Shelf Components

The photocurrents that need to be measured by PDMR (Photoelectric Detection of Magnetic Resonance) of NV-centers in diamonds are far too small to be measured by a standard ammeter. A way of measuring such low currents is a SEBAT (single electron bipolar avalanche transistor). Generally, a SEBAT uses a transistor specially designed to increase avalanche probability and decrease avalanche discharge times. We designed and built a SEBAT with off-the-shelf components. A bespoke transistor can measure electron rates corresponding to attoamp currents. This talk describes efforts to characterize the range of measurable currents with our ready-made components.
