Recent innovations in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) quantum sensor design have given rise to a new class of fiber optic magnetometer technology. These newly developed PCF stereomagnetometers exploit powerful differential measurement techniques to characterize minute magnetic field variations with micron spatial resolution in challenging environments. Photoionization of fluorescent defects in diamond also offers an attractive new approach to magnetometry that may extend the magnetic field sensitivity of such fiber quantum sensors into the region of interest for important biomedical applications.
