PHYSICS 489 - Week 19

PHYS 19.2 Circular Motion
Reading: Don't Panic Vol I pp 244-246, Vol II pp 168-169
Homework: I.13: Prob 5-7, Exer 4-8; II.9: Exer 1
Keywords: Period, Rolling motion, Magnetic Field, Cross Product, Lorentz force.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session the student will be able to:
  1. relate the period, frequency and angular velocity for uniform circular motion.
  2. relate center of mass velocity to angular velocity for rolling motion.
  3. calculate the vector cross product using either the components of the two vectors or their magnitudes and the angle between them.
  4. explain the right hand rule and state the result of crossing one unit vector with any of the three unit vectors.
  5. determine the magnetic force on a charged particle in a magnetic field.
  6. apply Newton's 2nd Law to systems exhibiting circular motion.

PHYS 19.3 Magnetic Fields & the Lorentz Force
Reading: Don't Panic Vol II pp 169-174
Homework: Ch. 9: Pr 1,3-5, Ex 2-5
Keywords: Cyclotron frequency, Hall effect

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session the student will be able to:
  1. write down the Lorentz force, including both the electric and magnetic field terms.
  2. determine the radius of the circular orbit of a charged particle moving in a B field.
  3. describe the general motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field.
  4. calculate the force on a current carrying wire.
  5. discuss the Hall effect and use it to explain how the magnetic force is actually developed on a current carrying wire.
