PHYSICS 489 - Week 17

PHYS 17.1 Review Fall Semester's Final Exam

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session the student will be able to:
  1. list misconceptions or weaknesses indicated by your performance on the fall final exam.
  2. correctly solve all problems on that exam.

PHYS 17.2 Drift Velocity & Current Density
Reading: Don't Panic Vol II pp 124-128, 137-144
Homework: Ch. 7: Pr 4,5; Ex 4,5
Ch. 8: Pr 1,2; Ex 1,2
Keywords: Joule's Law, Drift velocity, Current density, Continuity equation, Electromotive force (emf)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session the student will be able to:
  1. state and explain the meaning of the steady state equation of continuity.
  2. state Joule's Law in its various forms.
  3. derive the expression relating the electron drift velocity to the current passing through a conductor having cross-section A and n conduction electrons per unit volume.
  4. explain the two functions of an emf and distinguish between an ideal emf and a real emf.
  5. determine the rate at which an emf does work and the sign of that work, as current flows through it.

PHYS 17.3 Simple D.C. Circuits
Reading: Don't Panic Vol II pp 144-149
Homework: Ch. 8: Pr 3-5; Ex 3
Keywords: Series & parallel resistors, Circuital law (Kirchhoff Loop Rule), Steady-state Continuity Equation (Kirchhoff Junction Rule)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session the student will be able to:
  1. apply the Loop Rule to develop equations relating the steady state currents in multiloop circuits.
  2. apply the Junction Rule to junctions where three or more wires are joined in a multiloop circuit.
  3. combine the above equations to solve for the loop currents.
