Minors offered by The Department of Physics and Astronomy:

Physics Minor (not open to Physics majors)

Students who wish to complete a minor in Physics must satisfy the following requirements with a C or better:
  • PHYS 206/226* (4 credits), PHYS 207/227* (4 credits), PHYS 221 (3 credits), and PHYS 309** (3 credits)
  • 3 hours of physics at the 300 – 400 level (excluding PHYS 485 and PHYS 491), selected in conference with a Physics and Astronomy advisor (most common classes – ASTR 314, PHYS 302, PHYS 304, PHYS 331)
  • Minor coursework must include a minimum of 6 hours of 300- and/or 400-level coursework from TAMU (Student Rule 14.16).
  • To declare a Physics minor, fill out the PHYS Minor Declaration Form and email it to advising@physics.tamu.edu as a PDF file attachment. PHYS 206 and 207 must be complete before declaring.
  • Note: No substitutions of Engineering courses will be allowed, except for ENGR/PHYS 216 and ENGR/PHYS 217.

* Engineering majors will take ENGR/PHYS 216 in place of PHYS 226 and ENGR/PHYS 217 in place of PHYS 227. **If a student already has credit for PHYS 222 instead of PHYS 309, then a different 300-400 level PHYS course will need to be substituted for PHYS 309.

Astrophysics Minor (open to all majors)

Students who wish to complete a minor in Astrophysics must satisfy the following requirements with a C or better:
  • PHYS 207/227* (4 credits), ASTR 314 (3 credits), ASTR 320 (2 credits)

If ASTR 491 is used to meet minor requirements, 3 credit hours must be taken in a single semester and approval from the faculty member must be obtained prior to registration.
  • Minor coursework must include a minimum of 6 hours of 300- and/or 400-level coursework from TAMU (Student Rule 14.16).
  • To declare an Astrophysics minor, fill out the ASTP Minor Declaration Form and email it to advising@physics.tamu.edu as a PDF file attachment.

* Engineering majors will take ENGR/PHYS 217 in place of PHYS 227.
